Wooden Boats on Parade

The San Francisco Model Yacht Club presented a special event. A collection of old (and new) wooden boats of all types. Here's an example of what you could have expected to see from the Contest Director, Ken Valk.

Were you ready for OCTOBER 13TH? I really hope so because this was a most unusual and fun exhibit. WOODEN BOATS ON PARADE was two events featuring RC boats at lakeside, and a separate static display of models inside the Clubhouse. REMEMBER, THERE WAS NO JUDGING. We saw models never before seen, things such as delicate ships in bottles, and even a boat in a light bulb. When was the last time you saw a 1 cylinder 4 cycle Gannet motor running thru a handcrafted V Drive in a boat called "Whiraway"? Or how about that beautiful tug featured a few issues ago in Scale Ship Modeler named "The Panama? It came up from Los Angeles with its builder Bob Herrera.

Does the name "Baby Bootlegger" ring any bells? It was one of the rarest wood racers and you'll see it and several other runabouts in progress with their intricate framing and deck joinery from one of the foremost builders in the U.S.

If history is your thing, when was the last time you saw a 1912 scratch built steamer at lakeside? Well "Bobby", the oldest boat in the club will be there too. If detail is your thing, maybe the scratch built Stephens Motor Yacht, complete down to the toilet, will peak your interest.

But there's also the 1/8" scale Chris-Craft Cobra you will find almost impossible to believe that began as a Dumas kit. Or maybe the slightly modified version of the Midwest Lobster Boat, which is now 6 feet, would have caught your eye.

And this was only the beginning of the exhibit. IF IT WAS A WOODY, someone brought it out. It was a relaxing affair, with good food, new boats and new faces, and interesting souvenirs to take home. A special T-shirt sold out on event day. A video is available contact vidiot@tugboats.com for only $25.00.
