John is still working on the history of the Miki-Miki class Tugs and would like to hear from anyone who has more stories, anecdotes, photos, current sightings etc. etc.for later editions.  These were built by the army and went into private service after the war. Please contact either of us if you have any information or direction. Thanks in advance from both of us. He will be publishing as soon as he gets some more recent anecdotal info. Look for more details here. He's building a 3/8" scale Miki-Miki class model and will be sailing in the Seattle area soon. Contact John Benthien (joben@joben.seanet.com)

JAMES WHALEN TUGBOAT RESTORATION

The email bag brought the following note:
Looking for something???? Well..I sure am! I'm looking for information, photos etc...about one particular tugboat... The JAMES WHALEN.
The reason is...He's the president of the restoration of this vessel, and his group is planning on opening the hatches and welcoming aboard visitors this summer to their exhibit. The tug is located in Thunder Bay, Ontario. The JAMES WHALEN was built in Toronto in 1905 for use on Lake Superior as an ice breaker tug. It was used until 1991 when it became too expensive to keep afloat....hence they rescued the tug, and eventually restored the JAMES WHALEN to it's previous glory!
As the vessel sailed on almost all of the great lakes and the east coast of Canada for over 80 years...there could be photos out there that they would like to add to the collection up here..
We'll keep you informed as to the official opening...Thanks for any possible leads on the JAMES WHALEN.
